Do people still collect vinyl in 2026?

In 2026, with all the AI, quantum computing, etc., you'd think people would be consuming their music the same way. But despite prompt-able music making apps and long-dead pop stars releasing new albums, people continue to invest in physical music.
In 2025, Forbes magazine (ew, I know) reported that vinyl sales had increased by 10%, hitting over $1 billion in sales. That's enough to maybe buy a single rocket booster for your private spaceship. Or that super yacht you've had your eye on. People are spending a lot on vinyl records. But why?
Two reasons stand out.
1. Most of the entertainment and media we consume isn't really even owned by us. We rent it out for the most part from streaming services and entertainment studios. But when you buy a record, or even a CD or cassette or DVD, you actually OWN the thing. You can hold it. You can take it home. You can tuck it in at night. Maybe cook it a nice meal before meeting its parents. What ever you do, it's yours!
Secondly, recorded music doesn't make money anymore except the physical versions. Thanks Napster (I might be somewhat to blame for that) And most physical media is sold largely by small, independent shops with passionate customers who love their local spots and rep them proudly. This is something that most other industries are DYING to get a piece of. Authenticity, community, and intent are baked into the businesses. And the big labels know this. They need us all. When your support your local shop, you support the idea that not only the big guys can have a stake in the music industry. Algorithm be damned!
Sure, records can sound better on vinyl (especially with a small fortune in speakers) but that old saying is mostly a cliche. Rather, it seems that people want to hold something, have something of their own, and appreciate something that will be there in 5, 10, 20 years, unchanged.
So the answer is yes, collect some records. Buy what you love. Try out something new. You'll need some music in the bunkers.
Here's a great place to start!
